Weight Loss Failures – What Goes Wrong?

Today, obesity has become one of the most threatening health issue than ever before.

It appears that in spite of the medical advancements in fields like exercise and diet  and the huge amount of bucks spent in research to determine the perfect solution for fat loss for idiots, the cases of obesity and overweight have been on increase.

The main reason behind this ever growing weight problem is our diet dependence. while dieting can appear as right thing according to the theory to achieve desired results, its not necessary that theory should match the results in practical world always.

Well, do you know that if you keep yourself deprived of food it goes in fact against your body survival response. And still, in most diet programs, you need to practically stay away from foods or certain foods. I am afraid to say but this is not long run approach at all. While you can achieve a probable quick weight loss, it will be very hard to maintain in the long run.

Many advisers also confuse people seeking weight loss that you should have strong discipline and will power so that you will be easily able to curb the natural responses for food intake by your body. However, you need to understand that the parameter of will power is useful only in short term goals. In fact, concept of will power is meant for shorter durations regardless of its purpose and scenario.

A huge part of the problem many have with losing weight is the innate neurological response that drives the body back towards it’s normal physiological range of function. Not necessarily what is best for it, but what it has grown used to, what has now become normal.

And don’t even think about trying to speed up the weight loss process. The rapid weight loss approach so popular these days is more likely to result in weight gain rather than weight loss once the honeymoon period is over. Rapidly losing weight creates a bounce back effect where the quicker you lose the weight the stronger the body responds in an attempt to return to  it’s normal physiological state and weight. And if this isn’t bad enough, more often than not you will actually be heavier than when you started.

So what’s the solution? Clearly not dieting. What we need to do is create change within this normal neurological response that is no longer working for us. And this can only be done by going slowly and easily and allowing the body to take as long as it needs to get comfortable with the changes you are making.

A lot of the information that is given as fact these days in relation to weight loss is clearly not that factual at all. Overweight people are everywhere and growing in weight and number. The current scientific approach is clearly not helping things and a cynic might say, based on overwhelming evidence, that the current thinking is actually making the situation worse.  We need a complete change in our thinking about weight loss if we are to create the changes we are looking for not only as individuals but as a society.
